FTTx Solutions

With the higher bandwidth requirement from internet users, now many ISPs are upgrading their access network. Compare with xDSL technology, FTTx has a much higher bandwidth, among different FTTx technology, GPON becomes more and more popular because of its reasonable cost and high bandwidth. As a leading Huawei FTTx solution provider, RSLab is known for competitive price, fast delivery and technical support capability.

PON Introduction

PON is a type of point-to-multipoint fiber to the premises telecommunications network, which unpowered optical splitters are used to enable a single optical fiber to serve multiple premises.

PON Network

The Optical Line Terminal (OLT) is an aggregation device located at the Central Office (CO) for terminating the PON protocol.

Optical Network Units (ONUs)/Optical Network Terminal (ONTs) are located on the user side, providing various types of ports to connect user terminals. The OLT and ONUs are connected through a passive ODN for communication.

The Optical Distribution Network (ODN) is composed of passive optical components (POS) such as optical fibers, and one or more passive optical splitters. The ODN provides optical channels between the OLT and ONUs. It interconnects the OLT and ONUs and is highly reliable. The ODN is passive, which means that no optical amplifier or regenerator will be deployed on the ODN, reducing the maintenance costs of outdoor devices.

HUAWEI OLT Overview

Huawei MA5600T/MA5603T/MA5608T are multi-service access equipment, they support different service like GPON, xDSL, VOIP, etc, they can work as OLT and ONU, while MA5680T/MA5683T are purely OLT.

Configure a Huawei OLT:

1

Choose OLT model, multi service or just OLT? Big capacity or smaller? MA5683T and MA5680T are best sellers among all Huawei OLTs due to competitive price;

2

Choose Main Control Board, although recently, most customers choose SCUN as main control board, dual main control board is quite common;

3

Choose Uplink Board, GE or 10G as uplink, RSLab will provide free multimode optical transceiver for the uplink board if they are optical based, also customers may consider dual uplink boards design to improve reliability;

4

Choose Power Board, for MA5600T/MA5680T/MA5603T/MA5683T, there is only DC power board and dual power board is quite common, as many customers don’t have -48V DC power, in that case a telecom level AC to DC converter will be required, which is also available from RSLabTM, if it is MA5608T, then customers can choose either AC or DC;

5

Choose GPON Board, calculate how many GPON subscribers will be connected. Generally, Huawei OLT supports 1:128 splitting ratio, but 1:64 or even less splitting ratio actually have been used by most customers. How many GPON Boards are needed to connect the number of subscribers: for GPBD (each GPBD Board can provide 8 GPON port), the quantity of subscribers dividing by 64*8, then you can get the quantity of GPBD boards; while for GPFB (each GPFD Board can provide 16 GPON port), the quantity of subscribers dividing 64*16, then you get the quantity of GPFD boards.

6

RSLabTM offers free B+ SFP Module with the GPON Board, but many customers still wish to have better SFP module to transmit longer distance with less loss, so customers can choose to upgrade their GPON SFP module from B+ to C+, note RSLab will charge for that

FTTH Solution

In developed areas, FTTH networking is applied to home access scenarios to meet user requirements for high-bandwidth and multi-service assess. Based on the ONT type, FTTH networking includes three scenarios:

0 1
Bridging
ONT+HGW
Networking

0 2
Bridging
ONT+home
gateway (HGW)

0 3
HGW ONT

As shown in Figure, one ONT works as the bridge and the other ONT integrating an IAD provides Internet and VoIP to users.The HGW ONT facilitates interconnection of home devices by providing Layer 3 services, such as Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet (PPPoE)/DHCP dial-up, network address translation (NAT), and Internet Group Management Protocol (IGMP) snooping. This scenario provides fine-grained management channels and service control, and mainly applies to Layer 3 networking.The FTTH solution supports IPv6 technologies, relieving the pressure of IP address shortage.

FTTB/FTTC Solution

FTTB refers to fiber to the building, in which, optical fibers are routed from a central office (CO) to a building. Within a building, category 5 cables (LAN) or copper lines (VDSL2) are used between the service aggregation node in the building (such as a weak-current box or basement) and user homes for service access. FTTB networks are commonly used in densely populated commercial or residential areas with high-rise buildings.

FTTC refers to fiber to the curb, in which, optical fibers are routed from a CO to a street cabinet or a residential area cabinet. Copper lines are used between the cabinet and user homes. Generally, the distance between a cabinet and a user home is 300 m to 3,000 m and DSL is commonly used for service access. FTTC networks are used in massive residential areas where people are sparsely populated with independent multi-story houses and dispersed villas.

According to the service access

FTTB/C network applications can be divided into the following four kinds of scenes:

01
FTTB Networking (LAN
Access/ LAN + POTS
access, Without HGW)
02
FTTB/C Scenario (xDSL
Access/ xDSL+POTS
Access, Without HGW)
03
FTTB+HGW Scenario
(Voice Service Provided
by ONU)
04
FTTB+HGW Networking
(HGW Providing the VoIP
Service)

ONU for FTTB(LAN access/ LAN + POTS access)networking: MA5612, MA5620.

The ONU is deployed in the building and is connected to the user's home through the category-5 cable.

1

For the Internet access service: Users are connected to the ONU through category-5 cables and are authenticated by dialup using PCs. Each user has an independent account and is authenticated and managed on the BRAS.

2

For the VoIP service: Users are provisioned with the VoIP service through the ONU with the build-in voice module. ONU for FTTB(xDSL/xDSL + POTS access) networking: MA5616. The ONU is deployed in the building corridor, the curb (fiber distribution terminal), or at home through twisted wires.

3

Internet access service: A modem at the subscriber's house allows for high-speed Internet access. The subscriber needs to dial up on a computer for authentication because the modem is a Layer 2 device. Each subscriber has a unique account. The broadband remote access server (BRAS) manages and authenticates subscribers.

4

The HGW can be connected to the upstream ONU through the Ethernet or xDSL port and can provide the Internet access service through the FE or Wi-Fi port and the IPTV service through the FE port on the downstream direction

5

The HGW has Layer 3 functions (such as PPPoE dialup and NAT), which enable multiple PCs of a family to have access to the Internet at the same time.

6

The STB connected to the HGW provides IPTV program preview and access functions.

7

The IAD embedded in the HGW provides one or several POTS ports, which enable multiple phones of a family to have access to the Internet at the same time.

8

Voices service: The voice module built in an ONU can provide voice over IP (VoIP) services. ONUs can be applicable to FTTB+HGW Scenario: MA5612, MA5616. Among these ONUs, ONUs with LAN ports include MA5612, ONUs with ADSL2+/VDSL2 ports include MA5616 FTTB+HGW Networking, the GPON OLT is deployed at the central office and connects to the MAN using aggregation, and the ONU is deployed in the buildings or street fiber distribution terminals. Access interfaces are deployed on the HGW that connects to the ONU using LAN or xDSL.
